Ooban
A moment to unwind in the city.
At Ooban, an unassuming Jujo teishoku diner, sweet-and-spicy garlic-laden karashiyaki takes centre stage alongside a generous selection of fish set meals, easily enjoyed from the counter.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
A beloved local speciality of Jujo, karashiyaki is an enticingly punchy dish of pork and tofu braised in a sweet and savoury sauce, heavily laced with garlic and spiced with chilli peppers. At Ooban, thick slabs of tofu and pork simmer until thoroughly infused with the seasoning, topped off with finely julienned cucumber and chopped scallions to provide crisp freshness against the bold sweet-spicy profile. The house menu offers both the full karashiyaki teishoku, which comes with miso soup and pickled vegetables, and a simpler karashiyaki rice option for diners who want to dive straight into the hearty meat, tofu, and steamed white rice.
Beyond its famed signature, the shop stands out for an extensive lineup of fish-centred meal sets. Grilled and simmered seafood dishes run the gamut from butter-sauteed or wire-grilled salmon to saikyo miso-marinated black cod, salted or miso-simmered mackerel, and yellowtail collar (buri kama). Diners can also settle in casually over a glass of beer or sake paired with izakaya-style small plates, including braised offal (motsu nikomi), rolled omelette (tamagoyaki), and classic Japanese red cocktail sausages.
The dining room is a compact space arranged primarily around counter seating, making it comfortable for solo diners to drop by whether for lunch or dinner. Payment is cash only, so it is best to carry coins or paper bills when visiting. Whether looking for a hearty lunch with plenty of steamed rice or a modest, satisfying dinner on the commute home, Ooban delivers warm, unpretentious everyday fare.
